The main purpose of The Right Choice video is to stimulate dialogue between students and other students, students and their teachers, and students and their parents regarding drinking and driving. The importance of these conversations cannot be over stressed.
The discussion between the student and parent is vital to the success and effectiveness of this program. Eighth grade students are often overwhelmed with new information, cultural thoughts, emotions, and pressure from their peers as they enter high school. It is very likely that one of the pressures faced will involve the use of alcohol. If this eighth grader has an opportunity to discuss their options regarding alcohol with their parents prior to having to make that decision on his/her own, then he/she will be more apt to follow whatever plan was determined by virtue of that discussion.
I cannot stress enough the importance of promoting dialogue between parents and their student. This program helps facilitate that process. Ask the students to take the “Should teens be allowed to……” card home with them to start that dialogue. Make it a homework assignment for a grade to improve the chances of that conversation taking place.
This one effort may save countless lives! If it saves one life, it’s worth it!
